My grandfather owned a woodworking shop and the smell of wood shavings permeated his entire shop.
My dad owned a gas station for a little while and it was within walking distance of home so I'd drop by from time to time and my dad would give me a soda. I really felt like HOT STUFF! I think he owned it for about a year.
My dad would mow the lawn as needed and I really liked the smell of the newly mowed grass .
Funny what you remember. I remember the fragrance of carnations in our backyard and a gardenia bush in the front. What do you remember fragrance-wise?

Well, the soil is depleted. That is what I am going on and on about. We need to compost again. We have zero nutrition in our soil. I have one rose bush that is fragrant. You are so right. It is a barometer of what nature once offered and now cannot. We have zero good soil on our farms because everything is chemically altered. Even earthworms cannot live in the soil any longer. That is terrifying. We have to learn to be farmers and get back to the garden. It sounds like a pain in the neck, but the results are amazing.
