Weird the affection one can develop due to certain smells. For me its wood shavings, gasoline and newly mown grass. For you?

My grandfather owned a woodworking shop and the smell of wood shavings permeated his entire shop.

My dad owned a gas station for a little while and it was within walking distance of home so I'd drop by from time to time and my dad would give me a soda. I really felt like HOT STUFF! I think he owned it for about a year.

My dad would mow the lawn as needed and I really liked the smell of the newly mowed grass .

Funny what you remember. I remember the fragrance of carnations in our backyard and a gardenia bush in the front. What do you remember fragrance-wise?

Smell is so powerful, it is used as a healing agent.  Aromatherapy really works wonders in the right circumstances.

I love the smell of earth.  The smell of Ocean water.  The smell of trees and woodsy scents. . I love pine and patchouli when it smells of the earth and not that vile medicinal smell they sell.

Roses.  Oh yes, I love all flower scents mostly.

Basically I love nature and the scents of nature that are not foul scents, of course.

I love all the scents you do too Sharon. But flowers are not what I remember them to be fragrance-wise as a child. Roses hardly have any fragrance at all. Carnations none.  Did they breed out the scent to gain size or color? You go into a flower shop and you barely know you're in one. We have rose  bushes. White, yellow, pink, red roses and a kinda pale magenta color. The only one with any fragrance at is the pale magenta and then you have to stick your nose right into the rose. What happened? When and why! As a massage therapist you would know all about soothing healing calming relaxing scents. Thank you for your reply and the beautiful flowers!  :)

Well, the soil is depleted.  That is what I am going on and on about.  We need to compost again.  We have zero nutrition in our soil.  I have one rose bush that is fragrant.  You are so right.  It is a barometer of what nature once offered and now cannot.  We have zero good soil on our farms because everything is chemically altered.  Even earthworms cannot live in the soil any longer.  That is terrifying.  We have to learn to be farmers and get back to the garden.  It sounds like a pain in the neck, but the results are amazing.

Imagine not being able to smell flowers and we just get used to living like this.  I cannot do this any longer.  I am getting more radical and totally raw vegan forever.

I am not going to die because I did not heed the warnings. This post was edited by WM BARR . =ABSOLUTE TRASH at December 17, 2018 8:35 AM MST

  • When I was a kid, it was gasoline for me as well.   I'd make sure to sit on the gas tank side of the car and roll down my window whenever we had to go to the gas station, just to enjoy the sweet aroma.

My mom had a purple flower in her backyard - it wasn't lavender, but I don't recall what it was at the moment.   When the breeze picked up, the entire yard would smell of this particular flower.  (Lilac, that's it)

Not to copy off of your paper, but I too always loved the smell of wood shavings and freshly cut grass.

My grandmother's home had a certain scent, a "clean" scent that I loved as well.  It never mattered which home they lived in (they moved a lot), it always had this particular scent. This post was edited by Benedict Arnold at December 17, 2018 11:55 AM MST

  • Ever since I was a little girl I've loved my father's and mother's body smells. I'll miss them when they're gone.
I also love the fragrance of the earth after a heavy shower. Unfortunately, here in India we don't have rain around the year.
One more fragrance is that of the mosquito repellent stick when warned in the electric heater. Thank God for mosquitos
OMG, the more I write the more I remember. Antiseptic sprayed in a railway compartment of a train at the starting terminus.
