  • Again with pancakes, I know.   When I used to stay with my grandparents in the summer or on holidays, my grandmother would make homemade pancakes.  They were thinner than the boxed mixes, and she would cook them until there were slightly browner than traditional "golden brown" 'cakes.   She would also ask me what shape I would like them in -  Mickey Mouse, a heart, a flower, a bear - those were generally my choices.  Maybe that is why I love, love, love pancakes to this day. Sure.  Sliced cucumbers in vinegar and pickled beets remind me of childhood.  I don't know another soul who always has both in their refrigerator.  Corn starch gravy...most people use flour but I was taught by my mother to use corn starch.  I don't make gravy often but I always think about my childhood when I do make it.  The smell of bacon in the morning makes me think of childhood.  That smell was there every day.  Mother even fried eggs in the bacon grease.  They were ugly but tasted good.  I cook my eggs with no added fat in a skillet.
