Earthquakes sometimes result in Tsunamis. You get a warning. When a volcano eruption causes a Tsunami there is no warning. Any solution?

The recent deadly tsunami in indonesia was unexpected and so more people died than would have had there been some advance warning. Are there volcano-measuring devices as there are earthquake-measuring devices? Is it possible to invent some if they don't already exist?

I always wonder WHY those who have been flooded out or burned out or earthquaked out rebuild on the exact same land. Do they enjoy the drama? Thank you for your reply Sharon.

Tsunamis aren't predictable.  While a few places have warnings in place, they is no guarantee of safety.

Water is easily displaced (just toss a rock in a pond).  While we know of things that can cause this displacement (earthquakes, undersea landslides, etc.), we can't always detect them 100% of the time.   As "advanced" as we think we are, we really cannot predict what will happen on this planet.  We can make educated guesses, which may or may not take place.  How many of the earthquakes that have taken place were predicted - exact time and location?  Zero.  How many volcanoes that have erupted were predicted - exact time and intensity?  A few?  We may know that they're active and, phaps, that they have a potential of erupting, but how many have surprised us?  Unfortunately, once a tsunami is formed, unless you're hundreds of miles away there is little time to evacuate.  Tsunamis move very fast.  They can travel up to 500 mph.  That means they will traverse 500 miles in one hour - that's 8 miles per minute!  If something happened to cause a tsunami (earthquake, volcano, etc.) just 200 miles offshore, that "wave" would engulf the shore in about 16 minutes (provided it was headed that way).  That's not much time to get an evacuation order out let alone implemented - especially in densely populated areas (there's 372,000 miles of coastline in the world).  Also, not every earthquake or volcano eruption at sea causes a tsunami.  it depends on shape and magnitude of the water displacement.

Until we are able to predict (with 100% accuracy) the exact time and location of earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and such, there will always be tsunami deaths and devastation.

We can get people to the moon and back which seems to me to be infinitely more complex. SIGH. So for now we just endure. Thank you for your very thoughtful helpful and informative reply Shuhak.   :)

Writing on Twitter after Saturday's disaster, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, a spokesman for Indonesia's National Board for Disaster Management, called on the government to build a new system which could monitor for non-seismic tsunamis.

"Indonesia does not yet have a tsunami early warning system for those caused by underwater landslides and volcanic eruptions. The current early warning system is for earthquake activity," he said.

"Indonesia must build an early warning system for tsunamis that are generated by underwater landslides (and) volcanic eruptions ... (landslides) triggered the 1992 Maumere tsunami and the Palu 2018 tsunami."
