A woman with menstrual cramps is in too much agony to do anything. She goes to bed with painkillers, hot water bottles and a good book.
But women who suffer from pre-menstrual syndrome are more likely to commit suicide if already in a serious long-term depression and may be more likely to verbally or physically abuse their young children, or commit other crimes of violence.
It is the week before the relief of the period arrives which is the most difficult time for many women in their menstruating years. At this time the oestrogen levels have dropped to their lowest ebb and the androgen progesterone, (the female equivalent of testosterone,) is peaking.
Hormones on their own are not the primary cause of dysfunctional behaviours - but if a woman is already suffering from emotional problems, hormonal variations can exacerbate them.
