Truly depends on the situation.  If it is just a meetup each pays for their own, if it is and event it is stated up front who is paying with the invite.  If we are meeting at a Heuriger each couple pays for their own food and the wine bill is split

This a Buffet in Neustift am Walde  - our favorite

  • I had never heard of a ´Heuriger´ before reading your post. I just looked it up, my understanding is it’s a winery that also serves food? If it is I’m jealous.  Sounds like a perfect night out.

Heurigers are all ove Austria and Hungary, they are wonderful.  The proper word for one that sells food is Huriger mit Buschenschank.  Twice a year the Distilleries which ferment fruit are open to the public and can sell their products.

The best Heurigers are close to our flat on Severinger Strasse, next best Neustift am Walde  then it is a free for all of opinions.  The Tourist head to Grinzig where some are good and some are bad.  An interesting ewalk is from our house up Salmonsdorfer Weg to the Kahlenberg.  It is a walk through vineyards, the Vienna Wald and a lot of Heurigers above the Donau

Here is a stock photo of a Heuriger about 3k from our flat, this is above the Donau what you call the Danube

  • I have never wanted to travel to Austria since a few years ago when I first joined the other place and read all of your posts regarding Austria.  A old friend of mine is retiring soon and moving back to Switzerland (her homeland).   I cannot wait to go there and we're planning to go to Austria as well of course.

Send me a note, where in Switzerland?  Die Schweiz is expensive, keep that in mind.  Buy a 3 country Eurorail Pass.  Let me know

  • I see, thanks for the explanation and photo, looks and sounds lovely. If I ever find myself in Austria, I’ll have to hit one up. :) I’m probably going to have to win the lottery first though lol.

Where do you hail from?  If you come shoulder season airfares are cheap, Hotels/pensions are cheap, and your money goes a lot further here than say London, Paris, or NYC

  • I live in Ontario, Canada. I do like to travel,  but I’ve never seriously looked into costing out a trip to anywhere in Europe. When I do travel, usually go to places like Cuba or Vegas, which are relatively inexpensive to travel to from my location.
You’re right though, it may be worth looking into what the cost might actually be. Maybe experience some more culture than sitting at penny slot machines in Vegas  and drinking free cheap wine :)

There are great cheap airfares across the pond to the EU.  Now destinations are available in every price point.  Since you like cheap wine may I suggest

    Croatia****
    Bulgaria
    Romania ****
    Poland
    The Baltic States

  • Haha :) I don’t have a preference for cheap wine but they aren’t gonna give away the good stuff for free. And after a few glasses who really can tell the difference anyway :)

Everyone should pay their own bill.

    Period.

Unless it is a special event.

  • Usually we ask for separate bills as it spares the awkwardness when a single bill arrives! lol
