I think the effect is enhanced in the middle of a huge continent.

The British Isles have had snow in the North and East, and we are being warned of temperatures possibly dropping to around -10ºC (about 17ºF) -  but it is Winter, and such Winter weather is common here.

The news programme this morning on BBC Radio Four told us something of the chilly weather you're presently having in  North America and Canada, by playing several clips from your weather reports. They all mentioned wind-chill as well the real temperature. Our own forecasts do warn of this, but don't make a big thing of it, and do not usually enumerate it; perhaps because it's actually a highly subjective, individual effect.

Windchill is no more individual or subjective than actual air temperature. Windchill affects how quickly you can suffer frostbite. It's important information for us to have where I live.

Oh, please don't think I was trying to play it down. I know it is very serious.

What I meant was that its effect is subjective because it will depend on how well or poorly insulated you are, how much skin is exposed, the strength of the wind, dryness of the air and your clothing, your body's state of hydration; so giving it an equivalent temperature can only be a guide.

A meteorologist interviewed on BBC Radio Four this afternoon explained the Polar Vortex. Normally it as it says, over the Pole, but for some reason it has wandered Southwards, over the American continent. Temperatures at the North Pole at the moment are not ever so far below freezing!

Asked if it is affecting the British Isles and NW Europe, she said no, and the snow and frost with temperatures down to around -10ºC we are seeing just now, are just normal British Winter weather. Nevertheless we are warned of the wind-chill effect, but it's more often given as something like, "... down to around -8º, but with the wind-chill it will feel much colder."

We are also well aware that the cold can kill; with elderly, frail people alone at home, being at highest risk.

By chance the forecast is on the radio next to me as I type: snow in the South-West England and Wales, frost in clear areas so a lot of ice about.
