Americans are a peculiar people. There is a Holocaust museum to memorialize a tragedy and honor the dead. Makes sense. But on the flip side?

A museum housing statues that honor those who killed their own people due to a difference of opinion. To own slaves or not to own slaves? To treat all human beings equally or hold hostage a certain segment of them due to skin color? That was not a worthy difference of opinion to kill for but it was worthy of dying for.  FREEDOM !The UNDERGROUND RAILWAY helped slaves escape to freedom. That was the only good thing that happened. The only HONORABLE thing. The only rational reasonable sensible logical thing. The rest of it? You can take all those statues and flags and hide them from sight forevermore because they are symbols mementos of an ugliness we never seem to be able to crush and destroy and eliminate. Why that is I don't know.  People died to keep slavery alive. Can you imagine a more evil senseless absurd ridiculous reason to die for than that?

  •    I get it, Rosie.  Makes no sense indeed, and I disagree with the other comment.  I didn't see any implication that you feel you're perfect, nor did I find your point of view harsh.   Stones...glass houses...pot...kettle...   I see it often...

You are a treasure lavender. Seriously. Thank you so much for getting me. And NOT MINDING what you get. I appreciate it. What I wonder though is that what is it that causes you to understand completely while others don't seem to have a clue? I'm gonna ask. It's what I do! But you KNOW that sweetie! Thank you for your reply lavender! Here goes! :)

  • I don't know, Rosie. Some people are unable to constructively disagree. It gets old.

"Constructively disagree". I like that lavender. Never thought about it in those terms. But you know what? I'd be happy to settle for civility. Disagree calmly absent insult or attack. I'd love CONSTRUCTIVE but maybe  it's too much to hope for because for some reason emotions get involved and then well it's off to the races no holds barred. I tell you what I think. You tell me what you think. Period. No blood is drawn. We move on. Simple no? Thank you for your reply and Happy Monday. I feel a question coming sweetie. Thanks! :)

I'm not sure what point you're making that connects Holocaust Museum and the Underground Railroad.  First of all, the Holocaust is memorialized in countries other than the US, and there are memorials to the Underground Railroad in at least three US locations.
Secondly, while I may disagree with them, there are people who claim that identifying with the Confederacy is not only about slavery, just as the US Civil War was not waged solely on the issue of slavery (albeit a large reason or the main reason).
Next, spouting platitudes about historical events without alluding to facts is much different than studying history and making informed statements based on that knowledge.
Lastly, as an example, the US did not prevail in the Vietnam War, yet it has memorials to commemorate certain aspects of it.  Following your protestations here, if they can be understood, do you join those who decry the existence of any US acknowledgement of that war also?
