In my book, anyone who does something to help another without desire of compensation or glory is a hero.
It doesn't take much to be a hero. Situations arise every day where one can be a "hero". One doesn't have to do some grand deed to be a hero. True heros help others without thinking of themselves (how will this affect me?). That's not as easy as it sounds. We've ALL, at one time or another, failed to help others out of fear of how it might make us look, or of fear of the cost or possible consequences. We see a wrong being done but turn away or ignore it. We see someone struggling, but we're too busy to assist. Then there were the times when we saw and did give aid. Perhaps we saw a person struggling to open a door so we opened it for them. We saw a car disabled along the road and called 911 for them. We saw an elderly person stumble and helped them to their feet. To those people we are a hero. So what if no one else saw? Any "hero" who wants/desires recognition for their actions isn't really a hero.
I've seen many "unsung" heroes. And seeing them made me want to be a "hero" too. For heroism to become contagious is the only regenition/compensation a true hero desires.
