What would happen to cows that are not milked? Would it be harmful, painful? Or would they just stop producing it?

They'd stop producing it at some point, although they may need to be treated until they do as they can suffer mastitis, in nature they would just stop when the calf is old enough to be weaned, just like human women. This post was edited by kjames at February 20, 2019 3:30 PM MST

It depends.  If they are just left to have their udders fill with fluid, the udder can burst.

They need to be weaned from milking.  Just like mothers often do in the human category.  I stopped nursing because my daughter did not seem to be fulfilled by just the milk.  I was totally ignorant.  I should have introduced foods a little at a time.  I think I just went to solid foods.   But I needed to wean off the milk producing.  It hurts like heck if you do not.

Ever wonder who looked at a cow's udder and thought, "Gee, I wonder what th liquid that comes out of those dangly things tastes like?"

That m'dear is a GREAT question. I sure wouldn't be curious about it. Can you drink milk directly from the cow or does it need to go through some processing? I'm gonna ask. Thank you for your nifty reply L! :)

If you drink it directly from the cow, it isn't pasteurized, so you may wind up with some bacteria.

Another Answermugger who had cows mentioned that L. Some folks like RAW and I'm not sure why. Does pasteurization reduce nutrition? Thank you for your reply! :)

I would imagine there are dair farmers and their families that might prefer milk directly from the source.  I've never tasted anything other than pasteurized, so I don't know if there's a difference in the taste.  Not sure about pasteurization reducing nutritional value but many dairies add Vitamins A and D.
