Men are sometimes called DOGS, never CATS. Women are sometimes called DOGS and sometimes called CATS. Why is that?

    But that is not true.  Men are called "cats".  Don't you remember that old song  "One for the money, two for the show, three to get ready now go cat go" - Stay Off My Blue Suede Shoes.  Men were certainly called "cats" at least in my youth. I remember that.  "Hey lets make the scene where all the cats are" .  And by extension women were "cats " as well - "you cats are too much" - meaning both men and women. 

    T have heard urban gang men refer to one another as "dog".  I guess meaning its a dog's life and were all in the together.  "Dog" was formerly a slang term men used referring to a woman who was not especially good looking. Or a woman they were obliged by commitment to be with.  Do you remember that song "Walking the Dog".  And guys used to say if they had to go do something with their wives or girlfriends "OK I have to go walk the dog". 

    One thing I have noticed is dogs themselves are often referred to as masculine and cats as feminine.  Not sure why this is - perhaps because dogs are larger and noisier and cats are quieter and craftier.
