They are fascinating to watch, harmless, (Except the blue ringed one. You'll be dead before you can surface.) They are quite intelligent, also.

I don't know about that harmless part I have a buddy that is a commercial scuba diver and he has had a few bad experiences with then. They usually try to ripe his mask off and the last one he had a problem with through a rock at him. We have the Worlds largest species of squid here on Vancouver Island so I'm a land lover. Cheers and happy weekend!

That would be the Giant Pacific Octopus. The Giant squids live in the deep oceans and are rarely seen. I am quite harmless, too...unless you mess with me.

Ya I'm going be a real land lover now because a giant octopus scares me more then then a giant squid. Another reason I'm a land lover is because there are a lot of stories about sea serpents on Vancouver Island if you Google Vancouver Island Sea Serpents you will find lots of interesting info. I think crabs look more like spiders than octopi do.

I've always had a sneaking suspicion that the Medusa legend was caused by someone coming up from diving (for pearls or whatever) with an octopus on their head.

That's probably true, your take on the Medusa legend.

I think crabs look like spiders with armor.

One of their arm things is not an arm but a thing...  So never shake hands With one....and always far better to choose the other....  ;)D

That it is not like us, and yet at the same time it is like us. It has circulating blood, but it is copper based blood instead of iron based like ours, so its blood, instead of red, is bluish-green. The octopus has good eyesight too. But its eye evolved independently from ours, better perhaps, because octopus vision does not suffer that blind spot that mammals have to contend with (though most people don't even realise they have it).
Of course, octopi are renowned problem solvers too, and that probably makes them worth getting to know.
