  • Most likely,  but I have no idea how much it was cos it was a gift back when people wore watches. It was a popular brand at time but I just liked it cos pretty. Couldn‘t have cared less about the name.

  • No it was one of those dorky calculator watches that probably cost $15 from K-Mart.

On my last ship (USS LaSalle), I was talking with our Executive Officer, CDR Johnson on deck. He was holding on to the lifeline and I looked down at his hand. His gold Rolex was unclasped. I said..."Commander..."Don't move." and grabbed his wrist. He owed me one.

My buddy lost a prized Patek Philippe “chronograph“ overboard in the Gulf on one of our fishing trips a couple summers back. $15,000. (It was supposedly waterproof to 300 meters, but we’ll never know) smh This post was edited by Don Barzini at February 28, 2019 8:43 PM MST

That was cheap for a Patek. Those bad boys can cost as much as a Ferrari.

I will never understand why someone would pay a zillion dollars for a timepiece that is no more accurate than my $50 flip-phone. I was actually in charge of the most accurate clock on the planet. A caesium beam osccilator clock that was on the 'flying clock' experiment in the 60s trying (successfully) to prove time dilation. It was transferred to my first ship. I kept it at a billionth of a second of accuracy. An inspector from the Navy lab said I was the only one in the world who was able to do that.

    Hello there Element 99
People will have passions and a desire to collect all kinds of different things. For some it may be an issue of showing status, for others it may well be they just like and appreciate something that is finely made. For some it might be rare autos, others will enjoy art and pay hug amounts to acquire certain works.
I like to collect statues, some may say I am crazy to do so, but it gives me joy to find them and set them on my property.
A "zillion" to some is spending cash for others..

I was fascinated with US coins and completed a few sets...Large cents from 1816-1857, a complete set of Lincolns and Mercury dimes. I lost linterest when they were complete so I split them up and gave them to my adult children. (who have no interest.)

That is wonderful you were able to pass the collection along, even if they do not appreciate the value, someday I am sure they will.

It was fun collecting them. The large cents were my favs. All that history..Who touched and handled them. It was and is quite fascinating.

I understand it from a collector’s POV, it’s a form of art, but I find it frivolous in the extreme.
How accurate does one really need to be?

Yes.  I haven't worn any jewelry for lots of years, but when I was younger I wore a watch....small round  face/leather band.  My boyfriend who was in Europe at the time bought it for me.  It was a Gucci.  I loved it and when my daughter expressed a like of it, after I had stopped wearing it, I gave it to her.  She still has it.
