Have any of you ever had a job that required you to TAKE AN OATH? If so did you take it seriously and live up to it?

The oath of office of the prez is a serious thing if the sayer means what he swears to do. The current swearer meant none of them. The words were said robotically mechanically without emotion or intellectual honesty or any intention of upholding and fulfilling them. Words without meaning are just noise. That's what was "elected" prez. A meaningless noisemaker. Sad that.

No, nor would I take such a job (I've made an affirmation rather than taking an oath in court). I believe it to be hypocritical in the extreme to take an oath on a book that explicitly forbids taking oaths (Matt 5: 34-37).

Do all oaths require a bible R? I never had to take one so I'm ignorant about the mechanics of it.  But setting that aside do members of the military have to take an oath to serve the country? I've never been a soldier so I am also ignorant about that. Do you take an oath before God always? It never occurred to me that religion had part in it. And you are anti-oath but pro affirmation? What's the diff? Thank you for a thought-provoking reply and Happy Friday to thy! :)

An affirmation does not require swearing by anything, it's simply a promise to tell the truth. My yes shall be yes and my no, no. "Any more than that come from the evil one" (Matt 5: 37).

Apologies R but I do not see a problem with swearing OR affirming. Why do you if you don't mind my asking?  Thank you for your reply!  :)

Jesus said not to. Isn't that enough? I did mention book, chapter and verse. Look it up.

Thank you for your reply Archerchef. Was a Bible part of the oath-taking? I've never had to take one so I don't know and I've never been in the militar either. Is there always a religious component to every oath? I'm gonna ask.  Happy Friday to you! :)
