It is about nerves and staying calm. My Father in Law passed one and got away with it. He and two other guys robbed a bank. They other two got caught and told the cops about him. He passed the lie detector. He agreed to give the money back in exchange for no jail time and it not being on his record. Told them if he went to jail they would never get the money. He was the nicest old man....I still find it hard to believe he was a bank robber.
I find it hard to believe he would pass any lie detector test today. They are much improved and the ones that are employed by experts in the field would probably land your step dad in the pokey if they were legal. It takes a LOT more than staying calm. A LOT MORE
Wow m2c! That is some story you have to tell! It seems to me that someone who can "beat" a lie detector test must be very smart. I'm gonna ask. I get nervous when a cop is behind me. I'm not doing anything wrong but I get nervous anyway. I think I'd react the same to a lie detector test. I cannot imagine LYING when hooked up to a machine but I'd be very nervous wondering what my answers would look like on the printout. I suppose criminals can be nice. I know robbing a bank is a crime but it isn't like murder. Also if your kids are starving and you steal some food to feed them that makes you a criminal but at least we understand the reason for it.Thank you for your reply and Happy Monday! :)
They play Michael Jackson's hit song 'Beat It'. Actually it is a process of blood pressure, heart rate and mind control that takes some practice. I am not a Smooth Criminal or I might be into it.

Very funnee hunnee. How in the heck do you "control" blood pressure, heart rate and your mind bh? That's way over my ability to do. I've never actually tried because it seems so undoable. Thank you for your reply and Happy Monday! :)
I don't know if there is a way to deceive the machine under normal usage or conditions. I do know of a case where the person tested, affected the results by way of suffering from a mental illness. The answers given to the questioner were honestly believed by the subject even though those answers were obviously false. No indications of stress or anxiety. Whether you can set out to beat the machine or not, I don't know. This incident happened over thirty years ago.
