Discussion»Statements»Rosie's Corner» I cannot pretend something makes sense if it doesn't. I cannot pretend anything successfully so I never do. Can you? Do you?
I did try, but I'm lousy at it. The last line of the review of my portrayal of Papageno in the opera Die Zauberflöte was: "It's a pity the kid can't act."
I bet you know what I'm going to say R. What you said reminds me of what a famous wit said about a performance given by Katharine Hepburn. "She ran the gamut of emotion from A to B". How many Academy Awards did Kate win or was nominated for? Dorothy something was her name and I betcha she felt pretty dam* inane later on when Kate showed us her stuff. So one critic's opinion ain't worth a cent and sometimes lives to ridicule the opinioner! Thank you for your reply. So you SANG OPERA then? Which famous opera singer do you most admire? How close to that was/is your voice?
Richard Tauber. Not even close - he was a tenor, I'm a baritone.
I did opera and musicals - I wasn't supposed to get the starring role in The Magic Flute, but the lead baritone came down with flu the day before so the 19-year-old understudy was pitched into a role I just wasn't ready for. I sang it pretty well but acted it absysmally. After that I was relegated to the chorus for Berenice but got a couple of minor roles in musicals - Rotten Luck Willie in Paint Your Wagon and Freddy Eynesford-Hill in My Fair Lady - parts that required little acting but each had one huge song. They Call The Wind Mariah in the former and On The Street Where You Live in the latter.
