    Isn't that what "love" requires?
You have to let down your guard and let someone get to know you.
Most times it doesn't work out ... but that's what "dating" is all about.
Finding that one person who takes you as you are - and you take as they are.
If everybody who was ever hurt after letting their guard down, never let it down again - we would have far, far fewer relationships.
Not just marriage, but in friendships as well.

Mine has never been put up Walt. Never figured out how to do it. So I didn't. It used to hurt but now and for many years I feel nothing.  Thank you for your reply! :)

    Yes and yes.

I think that the scars left on one's heart build up and become a sort of unconscious guard, though. They definitely impact our ability to be close to others.

I never put any guards up SA. For years it hurt but now and for decades I feel nothing. I just accept what is and don't dwell on it. I figger it is the way it's supposed to be and so nothing stops me from being open.  It hasn't happened dozens of times but it has happened more than I'd like and more than I expected. Because I know whatever it is won't harm me at all I just figured out that's the way people are. Well this is the way I am. Am I now made of stone? I have no idea. Thank you for your reply!  :)
