Since I discovered the dangers of saturated fat, I have backed off of most foods. About the only thing WITHOUT the heart clogging fat is bread, fruit and vegetables. Well, I like ice cream, milk, and that kinda stuff.

What about whole grains and beans bh? Now baked beans are loaded with sugar but regular canned beans are really good for you. Lots of fiber and protein and little or no fat. I buy refried beans and they offer NO FAT/VEGETARIAN varieties as well as the standard ones that include partially hydrogenated oils. I can't tell the difference in taste and I usually add things like jalapenos or at least the juice. Right now in my cupboard (I buy Rosarita brand) I have NO FAT TRADITIONAL and NO FAT GREEN CHILI. They also have a NO FAT SALSA. All very tasty. Other regular canned beans (the plain beans...not the fancy dancy seasoned ones) have no fat and very little if any sugar. Of course sodium is always a factor but if you add other things to stretch the beans out it mitigates the salty taste. Like for instance sometimes I will chop up some raw broccoli or raw cauliflower(I love both) and heat them IN the refried beans to make it more  nutritious. I think it's really delicious. Whole grains don't have any fat. Rice on its own alone, even the brown kind, is the least nutritious. Try things like barley or bulgur wheat. They do have some more nutritious rice varieties that include other grains. Ever try the MINUTE RICE Multi-Grain Medley or the Organic White and Red Quinoa? It comes in a two-pack and each pack of the former has 8 grams of fiber and six grams of protein and the latter has 7 grams of fiber and 6 grams of protein. I add chopped veggies to that and maybe a bit of broth to moisten it. Normal rice has maybe 2 grams of fiber so we don't eat it. Oh gosh apologies. Get me started on talking about food and I'm off and running off at the mouth. Thank you for your reply! :) This post was edited by RosieG at April 2, 2019 6:34 AM MDT

The tension in the book, which was a best-seller in the mid 1950s, is between the more rigid codes of life as set down by the boy's deceased father's instructions to the bank that administers his inheritance, and the wealthy, partying, free- thinking aunt who is charged with his care.  So essentially between the many responsibilities we have in life and our many selfish desires.  The message, or moral, being that even with the selfishnesses, the tragedies, the hurts, and rigidities of life we can still emerge sane and OK.  Not sure if that line is in the book but refers to our limiting ourselves in life whether through conventions, morals,  fears, or responsibilities.  So we don't allow ourselves to take advantage of much that life has to offer.  Which if we did might compromise us and hurt others as well as ourselves.   Message of the book was that the compromises and the hurts and dramas and recriminations are not all that bad or lasting.
