I don't think any site is "better" than the other. There are a lot of sites in the realm of Q&A and opinions and each one offers something different. What really matters is finding the one that resonates best with you. That may be YA or it may be AM. (Please be us, please be us, please be us... lol)
The goal of AM was to put everyone on the same footing to engage in open, yet respectful, discussions as a way of broadening horizons. We have a handful of leaderboards that showcase popular content, but there aren't any points and there's no member ranking system. We're in the process of redesigning the site and the new site will let you earn credits for performing various activities around the site, but those credits just let you "buy" gift icons to send to your friends- it's all about cultivating a community and bringing people in, not separating them out in some elitist fashion.
How does it work? You've got it down already. Ask questions, get answers, discuss, repeat. The main Q&A is the most active area of the site, but we've also got groups hosting discussions on various topics, blogs if you have thoughts/ ideas to share, and spots for photos and videos.
