It is Ebonics. When I was a teacher we were to accept it as a language that does not need any correcting. It is a special language.

  • I don't know. I'm a torn on this.

Would there be an uproar from the left if this was a Hillary supporter? Sure...from the Right

    It's a non-issue IMHO, but the black-face meme is..

I guess it's what the pastor thinks Hillary thinks black people sound like? Or more likely, it's just a crude attempt at portraying Clinton in the most insulting way possible to black people. In any case, it's one of the most cynical political cartoons I've seen, and that's having seen the Ben Garrison ones AI loves so much.

Isn't it obvious you should ask him? If you asked him he would probably blame the system.

I don't know, any sane, reasonable person who realizes that Trump is totally unacceptable?

  • Or Obama.  Republicans conntrol both houses. WHat he they done to resolve that?  The confusing part is..he's an older gentleman.  Some people used to say blacks were shiftless, lazy, and responsible for their own situation as a race.  Why is that?

I don't want her either. I'm voting for the person I hate the least

She do pander. He do pander. This seems very insulting to me personally GJ. I am a Progressive Liberal Dem and if one of Hillary's supporters had said about Trump "He do pander" you're dam* right I would have called him on it. An African American pastor who supports a Donald J. Trump? Are they not supposed to be educated and teachers and leaders? She do pander? You are torn? Well I'm not. Thank you for your reply. Different strokes for different  folks. Right ?

It is improper English that has been accepted as a "unique" language to Black people.  Teachers are even told not to correct it in some schools.

It is called "Ebonics"....it should be corrected in school.

I talked like that some in school...."She do ...."  "He be like...."  It is not a special language. It is slang and should be taught that it is not proper English. It does a disservice to the students who are not taught better as they grow and are trying to get a good job.

The Pastor likely was also drawing attention to the fact that the Democrats believe that allowing students to use Ebonics in school is perfectly fine.

I'm a repeat offender. I repeat, I will offend again. fair is fair.

Don't be offended. I believe my statement was true and it's not meant to offend.   If everyone was offended by what is said during political bantor, we'de be in a pretty dark place.

I'm an independant and if I knew that a third party could beat Trump, I'd go there in a heartbeat. As I've said many times, I dislike Hillary, but I dislike Trump much more.

Why does the "She do pander" insult you but calling him an "Uncle Tom" for some reason seems okay and not insulting to you?

It's actually a Southern dialect that was brought North during the Great Migration.  Because whites sought to keep African Americans isolated within their own communities those speech patterns persevered even in the North.   That's why black people who are raised in the suburbs and have a manner of speaking that does not include those idioms or inflections are sometimes accused of "sounding white".

White people in the deep south have the exact same manner of speaking.  I disagree quite strongly with claims that children should not be discouraged from using inferior Southern dialects.  We don't want America's youth sounding like Hillfolk and swamp people.

Next thing you know he'll be trying to convince us that there are 57 States in the Union and that the US Marines are one big, dead body . . . .

May I ask whom that is GJ? Gary Johnson?   Or the Green Party  lady Jill  Stein? I know it's none of my business but we're friends so I figger  "why not ask? What could it hurt ? " Here's the thing though. Won't you be throwing away your vote? Won't you be helping Donald J. by doing that? It's a dilemma for me too but I'm gonna stick with Hillary.  I'd write in Elizabeth  Warren but that would be throwing away  my vote so I won't. I don't hate anyone. I just intensely dislike folks like Donald J. I'm not a fan of Hillary's either..thus the dilemma. Dagnabbit! :( Thank you for your reply! :)

You know I play around with words a lot on Answermug m2c. You also know I did the same thing on Answerbag. I purposely do that because I think language is a living thing and you should have fun with  it. But I am not a role model or a leader or in the public eye. I  am just someone having fun on an internet social site. There is a huge difference between what I do and what someone like Pastor Burns does. And he is supporting a candidate for prez so I think it reflects poorly on him and on the person he supports.  I have heard of Ebonics. So you are saying that Democrats approve of the use of Ebonics but Republicans don't? Where is that written?  How do you know that is so? Thank you for your reply! :)

How we talk to one another in the privacy of our daily lives is one thing. We use  slang all the time . I mean look at those who text? There is a specific language for that . Having people who  are in the public eye speak like that is puzzling to me  . They are supposed to be role models aren't they? Or at least represent the best of us? I don't get it. Thank you for your thoughtful and information reply CSV and Happy Wednesday to thee! :)

Thank you for the link Rpf but I don't see anything in there about whether it is desirable to encourage it or ought to be discouraged. I think how we speak with one another in our private lives is different from how we speak in public in front of strangers. I mean we use slang. People who text use condensed words. How guys talk in the locker room to one another is not the same as how they talk in "polite" company. We should be aware of the forum and comport ourselves accordingly. At least I think so. So what do you think? It's okey dokey for a Pastor who is supporting a prez candidate to speak in a language/patois specific to some African American folks? Thank you for your reply and Happy  Wednesday!  :)

Because it was a school board in Oakland CA that passed something claiming it was another language like Spanish is another language and they were not supposed to correct it. It is not helpful to those kids, in fact I would go as far as to say it is racist not to correct it. It makes it harder for them when they try to get jobs etc. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oakland_Ebonics_resolution
