he scent of the cherry blossom is very intense and gives off a bitter-sweet aroma. It harmonises well with other flower fragrances. Yet is it distinct from the typical cherry smell - less fruity, more floral.

I only grow edible cherries.  While not as fragrant as ornamental varieties, they do have a honey-sweet aroma when in bloom.

Here is a photo of blossoms on my my Royal Anne cherry tree

Ornamental cherries? What are they used for Shuhak? Didn't know such existed. Your blossoms are lovely. So you have enough land to grow things? What else do you grow? And not to be too cute but ROYAL ANNE cherries are the royalty of cherries. They're usually more expensive than the standard variety. Does your tree bear a lot of fruit? Thank you for your reply and the photo! So it must be quite a site when they blossom!  :) This post was edited by RosieG at April 13, 2019 9:53 AM MDT

Japanese cherries (like the ones in DC) are ornamental.  They're mostly for show and aroma as any fruit they bear is inedible.

All I have left now are 3 cherry trees - 1- Royal Anne, 1-Bing, and 1- Rainier.  I used to have 2 peach trees that bore fruit that weighed over a pound.  One upped and died a few years ago and the other had too much fruit on it last year and snapped under the weight.
As for fruit - Both the Royal Anne and the Bing bear a lot of fruit.  However, lately I'm having to fight the squirrels and birds for fruit from the Queen Anne.  Last year the critters cleaned the entire tree before I got any (and it's a big tree).  My Rainier tree suffered a very hard late season freeze about 10-15 years ago (while in full fruit) and has never really recovered.  I get a few off of it, but nowhere near what I used to get.

The trees are gorgeous when in bloom.  And when flowering season is over, the petals fall like snow in even the slightest breeze.

  • We have an ornamental cherry tree in our yard.  The blossoms don't have any fragrance that I can detect.  There are no cherries on it of any kind either.  I assume they are cultivated just for their blooms and not fruit.   This post was edited by Benedict Arnold at April 13, 2019 6:40 AM MDT
