    Despite is a bit casual and slang-y, Notwithstanding is more formal

    I am going to say how a lawyer would write it and how it is interpreted. 
    No offense to lawyers but they do tend to confuse you with an "Old English" style writing technique as opposed to what is accepted in today's English writing.
