Discussion»Questions»Finance» When a politician spouts off about “free” college tuition, why are some people gullible enough to believe it could ever TRULY be free?
I get a kick out of the whole "college loan forgiveness" promise. Under IRS regulations, that money immediately becomes taxable income.
So if you can't afford the payments on your college loan - are you going to be able to afford the instant tax liability of having the loan "forgiven"? Probably not. Most likely, you're just trading one debt for another. And the IRS is far less forgiving on late payments.
Even so it would be a fraction of the debt. At most 39% tax (so a 61% forgiven debt) but if they are in that tax bracket then they probably can afford to pay their loan payment. Most who would get forgiveness are probably getting earned income tax credit so really would not effect them that much.
They are desperate or have not considered the bigger picture of where the money comes from

When the person is someone with a plan that gets you there. An affordable plan for all. You know, progressive socialism or some filthy liberal term.
The person does not expect anyone to be gullible if the person has a PLAN. The person with the PLAN WANTS to talk about his plan. He welcomes questions about the plan. You see? Trump people are so used to hearing that they are too stupid to understand his plans, that they just swallow his olfactory baloney. You know the old "I have a plan that will be revealed after 20/20. Tell me, who is STUPID enough to swallow that one? TRUMP's Dwindling Base. Who else?
They don't realize there is a difference between practicable and practical---Just more of that consequent ignorance and chosen stupiditythat we must fight against if we hope to be able to survive.
Who are these "some people?" I'm pretty sure the majority understands that money always comes from somewhere. Maybe even everyone.
It seems like a whole lot of people took this as a question about the legitimacy of college grants and don't look favorably on it. It may be worthwhile to point out that lack of education costs society as well. Lower education correlates with poverty, unemployment, poor health, and more. These things have additional costs, such as crime. Personally, I'd rather have my tax dollars go to someone's education than their food stamps (teach a man to fish and all), but maybe I'm alone in this. *shrugs*
