I though it was an alien crop brought here by the visitors who used the Nazca runways in Peru.
Interesting side track, well, for me anyway ... I saw an illustration in a archeology book I was reading and it depicted a photo of the Corn goddess from the mesopotamia region around 1500 BC ... Of course the only problem is corn is from the new world so WTF is going on here ... I finally found the answer

Apparently the word"corn" was used in those times as a generic term for any cereal crop ... Wheat, barley etc ... Hence the coining of the term Indian maize to distinguish it, real corn, from this usage :)
