Brazil's Rousseff was just stripped from presidency. Does that mean they no longer have a democracy?

She was elected by the people. Her substitute was not. He represents the elites in Mexico.

  • Not necessarily Rousseff was accused of manipulating government accounts ahead of the next election but she of course denies it so who knows. Maybe she was set up? It's hard to say without a back story. I think while there is democracy there is no reason to not have impeachment. Presidents are people, not Gods.

You could argue something similar for the UK. Cameron resigned, and Teresa May replaced him as party leader. As we elect our local MPs, not the Prime Minister, there is nothing technically wrong with that, but the normal convention has been for a PM who comes in under such circumstances to seek a mandate from the people fairly quickly. Gordon Brown did not, which was one of the reasons he was so unpopular. Given the chaos already caused by the Brexit vote, I don't think it would be good to have the added chaos of an election at this time, though I hate to say this; it goes against the normal grain of my thinking. But I feel we are in a big enough mess!
I don't really know enough about the democratic process in Brazil. As long as they have an election eventually, then democracy won't be dead there. I don't think there is a reason to worry.
