Can you buy weed seeds in stores or do they just show up uninvited? Can you Imagine a weed garden where all the flowers were destroyed?

I give you America the ugly courtesy of Dondonjohn who has spent his entire presidency planting weeds and destroying the flowers. Lovely ain't it? The stench permeates D.C. The stink is evident.  Some folks think whatever he do be swell! Even the smell. You be one?

A lot of weeds are flowers.

What determines a weed anyway?  Lots of flowers choke out other flowers so that cannot be it.

    Plant
    Weed
A weed is a plant considered undesirable in a particular situation, "a plant in the wrong place". Examples commonly are plants unwanted in human-controlled settings, such as farm fields, gardens, lawns, and parks. Taxonomically, the term "weed" has no botanical significance, because a plant that is a weed in one context is not a weed when growing in a situation where it is in fact wanted, and where one species of plant is a valuable crop plant, another species in the same genus might be a serious weed, such as a wild bramble growing among cultivated loganberries. In the same way, volunteer crops are regarded as weeds in a subsequent crop. Many plants that people widely regard as weeds also are intentionally grown in gardens and other cultivated settings, in which case they are sometimes called beneficial weeds. The term weed also is applied to any plant that grows or reproduces aggressively, or is invasive outside its native habitat. More broadly "weed" occasionally is applied pejoratively to species outside the plant kingdom, species that can survive in diverse environments and reproduce quickly; in this sense it has even been applied to humans.

Thank you for your informative reply Sharon and Happy Thursday. I didn't ask what a weed is or isn't though. This post was edited by RosieG at May 2, 2019 3:25 AM MDT

Well, what is a weed and what is a flower pretty much depends on the "eye of the beholder."

I have actually printed out Sharon Marie Therese Veronica's definition above to give to someone  it's pretty much the best one I've come across.

You can find it here  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weed

Weeds and flowers are not mutually exclusive categories---that why the definition (with the appropriate genus and specific difference) is essential for your question to make sense.

If you want to contrast non-flowering grasses and plants with weeds, you have to say so.

SAY WHAT D? Surely that cannot be true. How can an orchid which among the most beautiful things, ever be considered a weed? Thank you for your reply and Happy Thursday to thy! :)

A weed is any plant that grows wherever humans don't want it...a Rose is a weed on a cricket pitch as would be any flowers on a golf course Green where to ball goes down a hole in the ground....lol

I don't have to imagine, I look at every day!

40 years ago a man at church gave me a small bouquet of shriveled up violets.  Today my entire yard in inundated with violet plants.  Weeds!!

Trump's only been in office a little over 2 years and already he's choking the life out of this country.   Although my violets are weeds, at least they  smell good.  The foul stench of trump permeates the air from "sea to shining sea".   I guess there is such a thing as too much fertilizer.

Thank you for replying to the question I asked  Shuhak. I appreciate it. But I'm having difficulty thinking of lovely violets as "weeds", no matter how many there are of them. Now every spring our backyard  is loaded with some kind of "weed" that sports a lovely yellow flower! How can a flower be classified as a weed just because it proliferates and inundates? That's really hard to believe.  A small bouquet of shriveled up violets" and you now are surrounded by them? You really have green thumbs and finders don'tcha? Happy Thursday to you! :)

Violets have runners (much like strawberries).  When a parent plant sets out runners, it digs its roots in deep.  Each runner puts out runners as well.  The runners are brittle, meaning if you pull on one it'll simply break off so you can't find its parent (which could be many feet away).  If you pull out the parent, its roots will break up.  Just one small root piece will produce a new plant within 30 days.

1/3 of what used to be my lush upper lawn is now nothing but violets (choked out the grass).  This picture was taken in 2010 when they first started invading my upper lawn.  today they extend all the way to the property line and out into the road (even pavement won't stop them).

What would be the purpose of planting weeds? Of what use are they? I'm gonna ask. Thank you for your reply tom! :)

Wildflowers and native plants are frequently referred to as "weeds"; and yet they produce some of the most beautiful colorful flowers around.

And technically, on a putting green on a golf course, bluebonnets and the Indian Paintbrushes would be very unwelcome.

(Google either flower name for pictures)

Dandelions are considered weeds and you can order seeds for them. Many people who raise turtles buy those as natural food.
