In the current 10 point MUST system, the fighter who wins a round is given 10 pts for that round, the other gets 9. Pts are also deducted for being knocked down or multiple warnings for fouls. Most rounds are scored 10-9.
What counts as a foul? I'm still trying to make sense of the fight I saw last weekend- Canelo Alvarez vs Daniel Jacobs. It looked like Jacobs got in more punches, but he still lost and I don't understand how. But, there were times Jacobs "hugged" Alvarez and the ref pulled them apart. Was that a foul? And Jacobs fell once, but I don't think it was after being hit. Would that net Alvarez a point?
hitting below the belt (usually more than once) Punching the back of the head intentional head butt tripping using the elbows to strike Excessive clinching/holding too much not breaking when ref steps in hitting while being separated hitting after the bell not obeying the referee’s directions
Points can also be deducted for not engaging or just running around the ring. Boxing is renowned for screwy decisions.
Points don't matter if a fighter is knocked out. If I had a dollar for every time I've seen the guy way ahead on points get KOd ... It even happened to me.
Amateur bouts are decided on punches landed. Professional contests on winner of each round, ten being awarded to the fighter deemed by the judges to have been better in each round. Points are deducted for knockdowns or fouls.
