What year did the US Armed Forces begin using four years as the basic amount of time which a person served? Also, was there a different

amount of time used among the military branches for enlistment contracts prior to it being four years?

    When I joined the US Navy
    it was for three years
    and that was a long time ago
    in 1961. I joined the day before I turned 18,
    otherwise I would have been drafted into the Army for 4years.

      Perhaps you misread or misunderstood the questions.  I’m not referring to any one person’s experience, I’m asking when the armed forces as a whole began the practice.

  • Enlistment range from 2-6 years.  4 active 2 inactive is the most common.
