Surveys of democratic nations around the world reveal a common trend. 80% of all voters are cynical about politicians and do not believe their promises or stated intentions.
The increasing disengagement and apathy due to a sense of powerlessness is in itself a dangerous response which could lead to the end of democracy.
The death rattle of Democracy is getting louder every day bw. Not only in the once good old US of A but worldwide. Despot Dictators are in control more and more. Extreme right-wing FASCISTS WHITE NATIONALIST RACISTS are multiplying like rabbits or maggots or roaches or superbug bacteria and soon there will only be an underground for democracy. Just as there was the underground railroad that helped African Americans escape bondage and Christians had to meet in secret to survive. Well Democracy is being stamped out everywhere and so we go underground and become THE RESISTANCE. For how long I don't know. Will it survive? I don't know. All I know is that it is getting harder to be proud of being an American. Never thought I'd live to see THAT day but here we are. Thank you for your reply! :)
Regretfully, I agree with you. Plato was of the opinion that all democracies would be doomed to die of corruption. The first example was Athens. And then Rome, just as it had developed a Triumvirate and Senate, and looked almost about to develop some symptoms of the beginning of democracy, died in the hands of tyrants. Democracy has been a wonderful experiment, remarkably short-lived compared to the length of history and further back to tribes and hunter-gatherer-subsistence farming. It brought for a short time a system of bloodless coups d'etats which minimized civil wars and the contagion of death. I still prefer democracy - but it requires an independent judiciary and fourth estate, and the proper education of its citizens in childhood in order to work, and policing of laws to prevent corruption. From the beginning, Political donations should never have been allowed.
