Whether the Republican platform is a con, I'm not sure. Maybe it depends on which part of the system one is looking at.
The top end of town seems genuine. They really do want: small government (minimal social services), protectionism in trade for America, (expecting other countries - to miraculously - not retaliate), protection of the rights of big business (to endlessly increasing profits without conscience about collateral damage), and lots of guns.
But there is a con inflicted on the downtown mob. The person without work, under-employed or on low wages who votes conservative is clearly gulled by Repub. rhetoric. Economists have proved there is no such thing as a trickle-down effect from business success. Company tax cuts have not resulted in one new job created. Instead, a portion of the profit is ploughed back into capital and asset building and the remainder divvied up as dividends for investors. Nor can protectionism in trade create more jobs at home. Instead, the creation of increasingly sophisticated robotics ensures that many jobs become permanently redundant. 90% of mining jobs have already been lost to driverless machines, trucks, conveyors and processors. Manufacturing is going the same way.
