Citizens are REQUIRED to pay taxes, have driver's licenses to drive vehicles. Why not REQUIRE citizens to vote? Those who don't pay fines?

It is against the law to STEAL or MURDER. Why can't it be against the law for a citizen who doesn't vote? Charge big fines and penalties. You can't put the in jail but you can make them pay!

No. I think being registered to vote should be automatic at the DMV. You should be required to prove your identity and citizenship. And then when we go to vote we should be required to show that ID.

But there should be no forced voting. I only want people to vote who care enough to know the issues etc. If they do not care/know enough, do we really want them to vote?

I'm looking forward to when we give computer AI and animals voting rights.
I have no doubts we will get there in the next 100 years.

Would you care to answer the question I asked Walt? Just askin' cuz I'm wonderin' why you gave me this. Yes it's interesting as he** but how do I use it here and now? This post was edited by RosieG at July 19, 2019 8:45 AM MDT

That's weird ... I had a couple blank lines then an answer, in my original post ... But it doesn't show up.

Anyway ... I would be fine with requiring people to vote.
I wouldn't use a fine or jail time, though.
I'd say you have to show proof of voting in the last election, to get any benefits from that level.
EG: To get any benefits from the federal government, you had to vote in the last federal election.
To get any benefits from the state government, you had to vote in the last state election.

The only exception I would grant, would be in cases where it was impossible to vote.  Such as being in a coma.
Being out of town, or on vacation?  Not good enough.
Some African country just had an election "do over" and people cancelled trips so they would be able to vote the second time.

Gosh Walt your answer is so much better than my question. Seriously. I LOVE IT!  Thank you for taking the question seriously. I mean what is asked of citizens? Not a he** of a lot. It seems to me we ought to have the desire to PARTICIPATE in our gubment and not just complain about it . I'm not sure of the statistics but didn't more than half of registered voters NOT VOTE in 2016? That shocks me! Anyway where do I sign on  as a supporter of your idea? It is excellent! Thank you for your reply. I'm going to read it again I like it so much! :) This post was edited by RosieG at July 19, 2019 12:36 PM MDT

The last statistic I saw, 52% of eligible voters participated in the 2016 election.

Of course, since I didn't fill out my complete ballot ... I wonder what the percentage of people who also filled out incomplete ballots was.

Are incomplete ballots NOT COUNTED? I'm gonna ask. Thank you for your reply Walt! :)

Here's a good answer. You asked this same question once before. A few moons ago, I believe.

People who are eligible to vote who don't vote are probably people who are uninformed about the issues.  I would prefer to have someone who knows what they're voting for cast their vote because they WANT to have a say in government (although we now that lately that's not so true) than someone who doesn't care.

What is the value of mandating decision making that determines the future of the USA by so many people who are inadequately educated in economics and ethics?
