No wonder you're aware about their harmfulness!

    1.  I can take something.  I will eat something with Indica in it.  It is the strain of marijuana that makes you sleepy.

    2.  I have fallen asleep many many times by listening to a tape on youtube.  Any sleep meditation tape works.

    ANY.  They are GREAT.

    3.  If I have nothing else and I need to sleep, I will take a pill.  I need to sleep. It will mess up my entire day if I do not have proper rest.  Must sleep at all costs.

    Meditation.

Insomnia is usually caused by anxiety.  Meditation can help quiet the "inner voices".

Anxiety is the usual cause for young people.

For young parents, it's having to attend to babies every two hours through the night.

After fifty, sleep patterns slowly start to change - sleep is lighter, slight disturbances wake us more easily.
People who are overweight snore a lot - they're own snoring can keep their partners awake - it may take time before they decide on separate bedrooms - if they have that luxury available to them.
For 50% of men over fifty, their prostate wakes them with an urgent need to pee.
While looking after my mother in her last 18 months, I'd have to rise to help her to the toilet five times a night.
I had to sleep with an ear open - because without help she would trip and could break her hip.

Nowadays I often wake due to chills or hot flushes. It's been 13 years since my menopause but they still don't let up.

People over 50 have anxiety as well.
I'm over 50.  Although I do have the need to "go" all night long, meditation helps me get back to sleep quickly.

    Hi Shuhak,
I believe you. I've heard that psychologists and professional sleep therapists highly recommend it - but I'm guessing it must be a specialised type of meditation - perhaps what I might call guided imagery or relaxation techniques.

I've never fallen asleep while meditating - and wouldn't want to. It would counteract the very purpose of the practice - though I have experienced plenty of other obstacles.
I've been a long-time meditator but my style of meditation, Vipassana, induces wakefulness, observation and mindfulness.
Some practitioners do fall asleep, even in the upright zazen or cross-legged position - but this is traditionally viewed as the result of moha (ignorance), one of the three obstacles. Laziness or lack of effort is considered a symptom of ignorance or wrong understanding of the teachings.

There are all sorts of meditation forms.  When It comes to sleep meditation, the idea is give your mind something meanial to do.  Such as counting by 2's or 3's as high as one can.  Some people use prayer as a form of meditation.  There's also lying back and relaxing each part of the body (toes to head) one at a time, as well as breathing.  As for me, I see how many valid words I can form out of one vowel and a consent or 2 (one vowel at a time, going through the entire alphabet).   I rarely get to "U".

Go through the multiplication tables. (You need to be old enough to remember what they are.)

I was trying to say only we mature people will even know what they are. I think we only had to memorize up to the 12's.

Yeah...I can still make change in my head. Kids nowadays can't even do addition tables. Forget division or fractions.

The best method I know is to exercise hard during the day - to exhaustion.

I feel supremely content and relaxed afterward.
