When did you discover you were really smart?

I have my moments when I think that, but they are few are far between.   I don't think I am really smart compared to people who are really smart. 

In 1st grade when I noticed I was the only one in my class that could actually read books.  I got bored very easily and acted up. The teachers had no clue what to do with me.

Stop that Sharon...you are smarter than 90% of those here.

Sometimes kids are smarter than teachers. You should have been passed on to second grade.

I'm a bit a plodder .. I need to put the effort in to learn stuff, but I don't mind as I enjoy learning ... One thing I have noticed though is that those people who we personally look up to as being smart makes just as many dumb mistakes as the rest of us .. I think street smarts and EQ are just as important in life for success as IQ

I think you have to define what you mean by "smart".  Does that mean excelling at the skills that are necessary for the survival of the culture you live in?  How "smart" would Isaac Newton have been if he'd been born into a culture that depended on hunting and gathering for survival?

My fourth grade teacher thought I was an a$$tard.  Said so in my...gasp!...'permanent record.'  I must have grown out of it by college, though, inasmuch as I stayed on the dean's list (no, the other/good dean's list :-)).

So...point being, if I'm an a$$tard, and I ever beat you in debate, then you're an a$$tard once removed. :-D

Likewise here.  Dunno what happened 'twixt grade one and grade four when my teacher said I was developmentally disabled. LOL!

Reckon maybe it's stories like this which lead one to believe government school is child abuse?

He should have been the teacher...even then. :-)

Latin class probably first made me feel that way; I would get 100% and above on tests without even trying. I had the highest grade in the class by far. And then when I received my Master's degree this June, I was like "yeah, I guess I'm pretty smart" :P

I think I thought I was smart in my teens, because I never had to try very hard to get A's. But then when I got older the ones who actually worked hard surpassed me. Brains without hard work can only get you so far.

Developmentally disabled? Most teachers cant' spell that. They had no clue.

Well, it's obvious that you had ADD and needed some amphetamine to do a chemical brain pith on you - not.

Remember, the world is run by the C students. They're not obsessed with such foolishness and actually get things done.

I do have ADD. And did then. It is very common amongst the hyper-intelligent. I noticed that in my 20 years of teaching.
