Some talking head said terrorists are looking for an ideology and "are attracted to the ROMANCE of guns and violence." WHAT?

What is "romantic" about hate and death and murder and violence and blood and gore and wickedness and EVIL?

Anything?

Isn't Romeo and Juliet "sold" as a romantic tragedy?
What's that story about?  A couple teens whose parents won't let date each other, so they kill themselves.

I remember reading that for advanced English in high school ... and all the girls were spouting how "romantic" it was.
I got "booed" for daring to state that it wasn't romantic at all.  Their actions were stupid and selfish.

We have romanticized violence for thousands of years.

Even the Old Testament stories in the Bible are full of violence.
And those are among the first religious stories children are taught, in many sects.
Sure, the intent may be to show how "God took care of His people" ... but it also shows "God is okay using violence against those who disagree".

Once again how your brain works astonishes me Walt. How you can equate Romeo and Juliet with the WHITE NATIONALIST RACIST TERRORISTS bogs my brain. Oh well. It is what it is. Thank you for your reply. This post was edited by RosieG at August 7, 2019 2:09 AM MDT

You asked how people equate violence with romance, and I gave you the most common example.

Almost by definition, terrorists don't try to look for ideologies. A terrorist has already found his ideology, and lets it fester and fester until it bursts out in hatred and violence.

Walt was not equating a fictional play written a few centuries ago, with modern racists. (Though I do  not agree with his depiction of the tragic lovers as "stupid and selfish". Despairing yes; self-defeating perhaps, but escaping others' tyranny.)

He was pointing out some people find "romance" in ways he, you or I certainly would not, and we can't avoid the cold fact that there are many people who find guns and violence "romantic" even if we can't see why. Though "fetish" may be a better word.

How else do you explain for example the most popular mid-20C Hollywood and TV films included Westerns with their intense racism and gratuitous but unbelievable gun-fights?

Or that the amended Constitutional "right to bear arms" appears to be as sacrosanct as the Ten Commandments - which include, "Though shalt not kill". (Though a matter of US domestic politics, it does baffle non-Americans.)

The "talking head" did have a point - there are a lot of people, and not just the terrorists, who worship guns to the point of seeing them in some sort of romantic haze. The terrorists take it further and see romance in furthering their twisted causes by violence and death. Perhaps they need to, to be able to justify their own evil to themselves and their like-minded fellows.
