What is your family's history vis a vis the military? Are you pro or anti?

My dad was a MARINE in World War1. He never talked about it. Not once. That was before he and my mom met and married and she told me he never talked about his experiences to her either. So I don't have a clue about the time he spent.

What about your family? Any heroes who got medals for bravery in battle?

Paternal grandfather was In a RAAF anti-aircraft battery - was in Darwin when it was bombed by the Japanese. No decorations other than service medal - he had a job to do and did it, nothing special.
Other grandfather was essential services, not permitted to join the military.
No service since - I tried to join but failed the medical.

I disagree with thee R vis a vis your grandad. He was certainly something special. He served his country when it needed him. What is more special than that? Had I been a guy I would have joined the Marines to honor my dad. Of course that is assuming I passed the physical and could handle the training.

Please tell me what is "essential services"? I have not heard of that. Does it mean he was needed more where he was then he would be in the military? I don't know if it's the same in the US. Thank you for your reply and Happy Saturday to ya! :)

I was quoting him. To Granddad, it was no big deal.

Mum's father was in the Commonwealth Drug labs, perfecting sulfanilamide and penicillin for use at the front. Without that, many more would have died from tropical infections than directly from enemy gunfire (infected wounds, etc).

I think that is the hallmark of a patriot R. It is no big deal. Don't you agree? Same thing with heroes. "No big deal". I think modesty goes hand in hand with true patriotism and heroism. I kinda like that. I'm gonna ask. Thank you for your reply and Happy Sunday! :)
