Yes nuclear submarines are not a new development. There was a Navy sailor who took a picture of his desk on one of these nuclear submarines who was put in jail for storing the picture (classified information) on his personal computer.
The SSM-N-8A Regulus or the Regulus I was a United States Navy-developed ship-and-submarine-launched, nuclear-capable turbojet-powered second generation cruise missile, deployed from 1955 to 1964.
We have had them since at least 1964. The advantage of launching from a submarine is being able to hide undetected until the launch.

They are "worse" in that submarines are designed to be stealthy. Submarine-launched missiles are viewed as a "first strike" weapon. (rather than a "counter strike" or "retaliation" weapon)
Diesel subs are quieter than nuclear ones, when operating submerged. But they can't operate submerged as long.
So there are a variety of ways nuclear weapons can be launched? Swell! :( Thank you for your reply Walt and Happy Wednesday! :)

It is highly unlikely NK has the capability to build such a submarine. Not every country has them, even highly industrialized ones. Two fully loaded missiles, each with 14 warheads launched by one of our Ohio Class submarines, could completely destroy NK. The subs are virtually undetectable with passive sonar.

They just do like Israel allegedly did ... buy an old sub from another country. I say "allegedly" because I find it odd that we can't track how many submarines each country has, and know when one is sold to someone else.
Well, maybe I shouldn't think that odd ... when we can't even keep track of when drug cartels build submarines for smuggling.
