I forgot that there is that. I wonder how much of it stays underwater now if that is the situation.  I heard that a lot of the smaller islands are in danger of disappearing in that area.  But as long as we don't have TRUMP managing their relief money, they should be FAR BETTER OFF than Puerto Rico.

I think they''ll do just fine.  They depend a lot on tourism, and it doesn't appear that their government is run by crooks, so eventually, they should be OK.  I think the smaller islands all over the globe will eventually disappear.

To be fair and honest, Puerto Rico has not had a decent government in decades.  They were in trouble long before Hurricane Maria.

Never have and no desire to go.  When I have the Sardinia, Sicily, Greece and the Spain within a 2 hour flight why head to the Bahamas on a long flight.  For a long flight I would choose the Canaries, Maldives, French Reunion, Seychelles and a whole lot  more

So neat.  I cannot believe you have the luxury of this wonderful traveling life.  SO AMAZING.  If I ever have the opportunity to go anywhere, I would consult you in a heartbeat.

For work I travel internationally constantly.  Just got back from Korea last Thursday

For a long weekend Air Austria has a 99€ flight to Malta which is les than 2 hours.  A Pension (small hotel) can be had from 60€ with breakfast.  Food for the weekend less than 50.

Baltic States are similarly priced, Croatia is cheap along with Montenegro.

No I have seen pictures of the resorts in the Caribbean, Cancun etc.  They all leave me cold and turned off.  Here is a Pension in Sardinia 65 at night above the beach and the beach.  You also do not get fined for Topless or FKK as one would in the Bahamas

Every life has its' updsides and downsides, enjoy yours for what it is.

Anthony was an NYC Ass of the 1st order.  I did love his ability to parlay arrogance into a food show and money. I never loved the prick in person, or even liked him.  Can you spell NYC fabrication whitewashing the sleeze portion.

Sorry If I tarnished your hero.  His show was always a booze filled white wash. His show on Vienna was a travisty

He was no hero. I did not know him.  I watched his show and you shed a new light on the subject.  But you would know better than me.  I never think of anyone famous as nothing more than VERY VERY human and probably full of themselves.  So, the show was good, and amusing and different.  And I got to travel a bit vicariously.

I don't envy your life over mine.  I didn't mean that. I don't want you thinking that I am sad and wish I had something else.  NO.  I am happy and really enjoy your viewpoint being a real honest to goodness traveler with a most intelligent viewpoint of it all.

    Thank you.  You rock.

A bunch of times.  So much fun.  It was our go-to place for casino fun before casinos became commonplace.  We could get on a junket for about $150-200 which covered flight and hotel for two or three nights and usually meal coupons and some gambling cash.  All drinks were free in the casinos....the drinkers loved that!   Cheap fun!  Slept on the beach all day and played all night.    I haven't been in many years but my understanding is that it is still fun but with some crime.  Back when we used to go we never worried about any crime.  Drugs are now big there too, I hear.  All good things come to an end.  I guess the last time I was there was in the late eighties/early nineties.  I was with a professional gambler and it was different....not so much fun....and I had to dress up.   This post was edited by Thriftymaid at September 3, 2019 10:36 PM MDT

Well now the Bahamas as anyone knew it has come to an end.  Good story, Thrift.  I have never been there.

I haven't watched news today to see how bad it is.  I've listened to it but not watched.

This is just a quickie recap.  I don't have the particulars but the Bahamas are "wiped out" and the hurricane has been hovering there and is expected to keep doing more and more damage for 36 hours since the time it landed. So that is not good.

The last I heard was it was moving again but very slowly.  The image I looked at this morning showed it had moved north a little bit..very significant that it changed course.  It if had kept on due west it would have gone right over my house.

You are in Georgia, right?  Isn't that too far inland for worry?
I mean if it headed that direction?

I did hear the same, headed more north now and dissipating slightly and also going about one mile an hour.  I think we are in the clear.  Mostly.  It could have been decimating.

Yes, its not far.  I can get my boat there in less than a day if we refuel in Miami, which I’ve done a time or two.

For those who’ve never been, the Bahamas are typical of many iconic Caribbean island destinations, if one is inclined to tropical island paradises peopled with friendly locals. A great getaway.
That said, I rate Jamaica as even better.

I have been to Jamaica. LOVED it.  Ocho RIOs area.  Back in the late 80's.  I have no idea how much it has changed since then.  I probably would be shocked.

Do they take in former Americans?  I'm considering my options after 20/20.

Yes, when I was on active duty, our ship pulled into Nassau for a 72-hour liberty call. I saw both the touristy side and the depressed side where the locals lived.
