Why is Arkansas pronounced `Arkansaw`? Conversely, why isn`t it spelled `Arkansaw` if they want to pronounce it that way?

    You would need to ask the person who first pronounced it aloud - and made such a godawful pig's ear of it.

    Then you would need to ask his friend and neighbor why he didn't kick several kinds of shit out of him when he did, thereby stopping the travesty dead in its tracks.

    It is one state up from Louisiana and still had a lot of French influence at the time of the Louisiana Purchase, therefore the French-pronounced name of Arkansas. Kansas was formed as a territory in 1854, more than 50 years after the Louisiana Purchase. Both names are rooted in similar native tribes; the Akansa in the case of Arkansas and the Kansa tribe, for which was named the Kansas River and the State of Kansas.
