Hmmmm ... personally, it would depend on which ambition - and if we're looking at the short term or long term.

I mean ... one ambition is to contribute as little to pollution as possible.
That might mean taking actions that hurt the nation (economically) in the short term - but long term are good for the entire planet, including the nation.

Thankfully, I'll never be in a position to make large short- vs long-term choices ... as I studiously avoid being placed in any "management" positions.

So if a situation DOES come up where I have to think of the good of the nation - I've already sublimated my ambition NOT to be in that position.
    lol

Ditto about refusing to be placed in any "management" position Walt. I turned down promotions that involved that. Managing people is a losing proposition. You have  personality conflicts and competitive undermining and jealousy and silly selfish pettiness to contend with and I have no patience for any crap like that so I just said NO THANK YOU. I feel your pain. I know sometimes there are short-term unpleasant things to go through in order to achieve a greater good. But you have to have VISION to see that and that m'dear is in very short supply. I've never been ambitious in the typical sense. I don't compete with anyone for anything. It's against my religion. I've never been interested in proving that I'm "better than" others for any reason. I keep my eyes on my own plate. I have no interest in what is on anyone else's. So that lets me out of a lot of situations many people would LOVE to be in. They can have it. I don't want it. Thank you for your reply and Happy Tuesday! :)

If God asked me to do anything in my power to make sure that Trump was not elected again?  I would do it.  Even jump into a fire.  He is going to turn this world into HELL.  And I might as well die because it's better than being under his reign.   This first 4 years IS NOTHING compared to what he will do next.

Every enemy he has will be in jail.  That is just understood. SO, it is time to put his sick rear where it belongs.  In the POKEY and throw away that key.

I wonder how that would work out? A former president in prison for high crimes and misdemeanors. Would they put him in solitary confinement? Would his life be in jeopardy? Thank you for your reply Sharon and Happy Tuesday! :)
