Only in earth  atmospher Rosie where there is friction with the air.....out of earth orbit  you can keep excelerating to infinity ....

Oh really D? No limit to fast way up there? Wow. Thank you for your informative reply. So friction is the enemy then? ((hugs)) This post was edited by RosieG at November 3, 2019 8:21 AM MST

In theory, in Space and safely away from a planet's or star's gravitational field, you could as Nice Jugs says, accelerate an object indefinitely. Well, to be accurate, to the speed of light, which is the Universe's speed-limit.

It would not disintegrate because every part of it is moving together.

However, "in theory" because acceleration needs a constant energy source. If that stopped in mid-flight the object would continue but at the speed reached when the "engine" stopped; until affected by something in or near its path.

It is hypothesised that anything that fell onto a black hole would be torn apart as it approaches the dead star forming the "hole", but that and the falling object's speed there, are effects of the black hole's own, extremely powerful gravity.
