I think we change throughout our lives. I believe morals/ethics can be changed slightly over time, little by little. I think we see some of it in today's media coverage.

What influences the change? Are the changes you refer to for the better or the worse?

They can go either way. Influences can be a lot. Early in life it's a matter of growing up and understand the concepts of values, morals and ethics. Not necessarily with consciousness. We have codes society defined as code of law, codes of religions etc. that will influence on us.

The changes we see right now, and have seen previously in history are under influence of fear. Fear for the unknown, insecurity that we might not be needed in the future, that others will take over our place in the hierarchy. This fear is used by "leader" to create a picture of an enemy which will allow us to drop our morals and ethics on how to treat others with no respect, as one example.

My friend said her dad used to be super abusive and angry all the time. They moved to another state and she said he compeletly flipped a switch and was rlly laid back and stopped the abuse.
I dont know details but i think sometimes people go threw somethings and it changes their beliefs and morals.

  • Absolutely yes .. we never stop learning, growing old just advances the process. I was never bad, and the changes have been for the good. That's been my experience so far.

Hmmm dropping morals sounds a lot like moral weakness.. I'm just wondering what sways a person's innate belief in what is wrong and what is right, permanently.

Fear makes you do crazy things... But I would think that's not really an abandonment of morals, more that the strength of fear overpowers the strength of your morals. I would imagine deep down, they'd feel that it is still wrong.

Or maybe I'm just naive and still want to believe in the goodness of people, lol

You might be right. Education however can remove unseasoned fears if being open, and have us see the world in a different perspective, and thereby also influencing on our morals and ethics. If I believed in any religion, this must be what is described as seeing the light.

I would say it's more like character can develop with age and experience.  Having morals is of course a part of that.  When you are younger, maybe you think a little less about doing what is right.  You are more influenced by external factors.  But as you age, you think more about the kind of person you want to be.  At least this has been my own experience.

I agree. I grew up Catholic, so I think as a child my morals were based on that. But as an adult, I think it's just something innate - there are things that I don't agree with in the faith that I grew up with. I guess when you grow up, and start to discover the person you are, morals are part of that.

    Thank you for your answer!
