An Answermug friend tells me Hitler was half Jewish. I did not know that but that explains his hatred for Jews doesn't it?

He was trying to exterminate that part of himself and was driven by unexpressed self-hate.

Just like the pols who want you to think they are straight who go after LGBTQ to throw off suspicion so you would never expect them to be part of what their expressed hate tries to hide. But in fact that is the best clue you can ever get to understanding wackadoodles like that. They are what they hate and there is no way they can expiate that hate other than trying to eliminate others who are just like them. But it doesn't work so they keep trying and trying and trying and they always fail.

For any of you out there who fit that? We are not fooled. We know what you are. A coward.

Thank you for being a friend. and Happy Bird Day to you.

I think he was Jewish.  I have read some very convincing articles regarding this theory.    I posted part of an article on the other question, but it will be interesting to see what other people on here think.

You tube is messing with me today and the song won't post....

I LOVED and LOVE that show Sharon. Watch reruns all the times. Only Betty White is still alive. They had their issues but in the trenches they could always count on one another. We're going across the street to our friend Wilma's. We both cooked. Shared the chores. This morning when the rain stopped I made two trips over and now it is POURING so I'm glad I did that. Our street gets flooded so Jim and I will DRIVE across the street and park in her driveway. That's California for ya. Otherwise we'd be above our ankles in rushing water. Have a great day sweetue! :) ((9hugs)) This post was edited by RosieG at November 29, 2019 3:38 AM MST

Very cool  I loved that show as well, watched it with my Mom.  One of those slice of life shows.  LOL  They showed what friends were and all their warts too. It was great. It was American. It was accurate.  And it was fun.

I wonder what those girls would think of Donald?  I think the man-hungry one would have tried to jump his bones and the grandma would march on the white house and not leave until she was arrested.  Maude would have to bail her out and Betty White would think Obama was still in office.

I'd sure have loved to watch that show! Here's hoping Betty White lives to a triple-digit gal. 105 maybe! Thank you for your reply Sharon.

Not half, but he had some Jewish ancestry.

I didn't know he had any Jewish ancestry which makes his quest to exterminate Jews all the more heinous. Thank you for your repy SSB. :)

    Actually, he was ¼ Jewish.
And his extermination laws extended to ¼ Jews but not ⅛ Jews.

Nobody seems to know any intimate details about his Jewish grandparent.
One could make a plausible guess that he or she was someone profoundly hurtful to Hitler as a small child.
Yet it might not have been as simple as that.
There may have been a schism in the family - problems with in-laws objecting to a marriage, or some such.
One parent or both parents might have been anti-Semitic.
Sometimes some Jews are also anti-Semitic.

Dysfunction tends to be transmitted down through the generations, so it's highly probable that one or both of Hitler's parents were Personality Disordered - probably Narcissistic and lacking empathy.

In addition, in Europe there were successive pogroms against Jews over many centuries - anti-Semitism lurked not far below the surface of a majority of Christians.
During the Great Depression and the pre-WWII days, there was incredible suffering in Germany due to the unfairly punitive reparations imposed by the allies after WWI. This suffering led to a general increase of anti-Semitism - people wanted a scapegoat for their poverty.

This zeitgeist made it easy for Hitler to popularise his own and the pre-existing prejudices.

Thank you for such an informative and thoughtful analysis bw. I appreciate it bigly. But how would he know if someone were 1/4 or and 1/8 Jewish? That strikes me as evidence of his nuttiness. It would require going back through the records of every Jew wouldn't it? Do a family tree of ancestry? It boggles the mind. So six million were exterminated because they were 1/4 or more Jewish? Queerly peculiar and very odd don't you think?:) I was married to a Sephardic Jew and shockingly he was anti-semitic. I didn't have a clue until a few years into our marriage. We were at an office party and one of my co-workers was Jewish and she knew my husband was Jewish too. I don't remember exactly what she said to him but he put her down harshly and I was so embarrassed. I went over to her later and apologized. I know she was hurt. I asked him why he reacted that way and honestly I don't remember what he said. That was decades ago. All I remember is his outrageous and uncalled-for attack. :( This post was edited by RosieG at November 29, 2019 6:42 AM MST

Churches and synagogues kept records of births deaths and marriages, and so did the state. It was not difficult to trace ancestry.
Beyond the mass murders of "useless" Jews, if a Jew was of an age to be capable of work, they made him or her a slave. Stealing the property of Jews and enforcing their free labour on starvation rations was one of the ways Hitler dealt with the problem of trying to overcome the Depression.
Did you ever see the film "Schindler's Ark"? It tells the story of an exceptional German who ran a munitions factory with Jewish slave labour. Covertly, he used it as a means to save as many Jews as he could, permitting them to make faulty bullets and smuggling as many as he could out of the country. At the end of the film, the real survivors who worked in that factory are seen walking through a cemetery where some of their relatives are buried. Among the people in that last scene were one of my husband's aunts and her husband. They finally died of old age here in Australia, just this year. Schindlers List? Yes I did and it was heartbreaking as well as heartwarming. My favorite part was at the end when the real people were shown. Thank for another information-filled reply bw! I appreciate t.

Hitler seized on the general resentment towards Jewish people in Germany at the height of the Depression, and exploited it. Martin Luther was a known anti-Semite, Hitler's Lutheran roots may have contributed to it as well but I don't think Adolf actually cared one way or the other - the perception was real and scapegoatism worked for him, so he used it. Much the same way His Royal Orangeness is making scapegoats of Muslims - it works for him.
When the Weimar Republic was in it's death throes and faced with rampant hyperinflation, a group of German Jewish businessmen did their fellow Jews no favours in the eyes of their Gentile neighbours. They bought the water works and jacked the price up, and were ruthless in cutting folks' supply off who were unable to pay. This doesn't excuse German antisemitism during the Depression but explains it somewhat.

You are a source of constant amazement m'dear. How do you know this? It matters not. Thank you for your very informative and thoughtful reply and Happy Friday/Saturday to you. Anti-semitism is alive and well worldwide. I'm sure it never died out altogether but it does seem to be growing bolder as FASCISTS take over governing various countries. I wonder when that pendulum will swing back again?  :)

When I was a child, my father gave me "The Diary of Anne Frank" to read. It contains the story of a teenage Jewish girl living in hiding in Nazi Germany. Also as a child, I saw documentaries on the wars and the Holocaust on ABC TV. I later learned about it in more depth during modern history lessons at high school level. Among the teaching aids was actual footage of what the Allies found when they reached the concentration camps, and some of the footage the Nazi's themselves filmed.
I've also read Viktor Frankl's "Man's Search for Meaning." He was a psychiatrist before the war. The first half of the book describes his experiences in Auschwitz and what he observed about who survived, who did not, and the difference it made if a person had a purpose for living.
People also forget that Mussolini also persecuted the Jews. There's a film called "The Garden of the Finzi Contini" which shows the tragic fate of one family. It shows what was typical of Mussolini's methods.
There are, of course, countless other records if a person has the interest in looking them up. They tell us much about human nature.

Then there is the fact that my husband is Jewish and his parents were survivors.

But I also remember that you have your history too, Rosie. Your forbears were survivors of the Armenian holocaust. So I expect that an anti-racist ethos is as vital to you as it is to me. This post was edited by inky at November 29, 2019 3:51 PM MST
