Discussion»Statements»Rosie's Corner» I know seasons are opposite down under from what they are in the northern hemisphere. Does water drain in the opposte direction?
Per Wikipedia (and I've read/heard this elsewhere), the direction of drain rotation for common things like sink drains is hemisphere-independent. The immediate geometry of the situation has far more effect upon the water flow than the Coriolis forces generated by the Earth's rotation.
How and when did that start Shuhak? Driving on opposite sides of the road from what we do in the US. Are we the a**backwards or is the rest of the world? And why aren't our measurement devices the same? Gallons pounds or kilograms? Different language entirely. Why? Thank you for your reply.
Yes, we're a backwards country. Why didn't we go as the rest of the world? Quite simply, is because we don't want to. BAck when the country was just starting, we had the chance to go with the "new way", but Thomas Jefferson thought it "too French" (they invented the metric system), and, afterall, we were trying to be "different". Since then there have been a few movements to adopt the metric system, but due to the time and money it's cost to switch ... and the fact that most americans don't want to change. As for driving on the left... I've read that originally everyone rode (horseback) on the left. Something to do with the hand they used to draw their sword. As to why we switched now, there's many opinions. Some say it was to rebel against the british way. Some say Ford's new cars had the steering wheel on the left so passengers exiting the vehicle (mainly women) wouldn't have to walk in the mud, but could step up to the curb.
I'm pretty sure thats why you lot over there have so many road accidents Rosie... I keep trying to tell Americans ,but they just won't listen....:( They won't listen when I tell um that Guns kill too....,no matter who's holding them either...:(
I know it drains in the opposite direction at the Equator, so I would think it would do the same in the rest of the Southern Hemisphere. I realize that someone else posted a link regarding this, but until I become a master at physics, its all Chinese to me.
No. That one's a myth. The direction of the flow of water down a drain or around a vine is the same in both the northern and southern hemispheres. It's caused by the rotation of the earth around its own axis, which is always the same direction no matter where one is on the planet.
What about at the Equator. An Answermug friends sez it rotates oppositely. Where did that fantasy come from anyone? Assumption? Thank you for your reply bw.
Rosie ! ! ...it will be 4 am here in England in 6 hours time and that far to twirly for me to add my twist on things... May be your President Spin Doctors can come up Trumps and take Turn's answering ........albeit I can't see how stealing little Birds will help. :((((
