Well, that was kind of the point people were making in objecting to the Peleton commercial. The actress/model in the spot is clearly quite slender, so a boyfriend/husband getting her an exercise bike is (without some specific context) implicitly insulting.

Stationary bikes don't usually increase muscle mass. They are great for cardio.

Most people buy exercise equipment with the goal of losing weight. If your wife already looks like a fashion model, what sort of
message are you sending by purchasing her an exercise bike?

With a few simple contextual tweaks, e.g the wife wants to take her fitness to the next level and compete in a triathlon, they
could have made the commercial sensible instead of insulting.

It's only an ad, but it did seem to get attention here.

I never looked at it from that prespective.  Maybe they are pushing if you get one, your wife will look like this?
