When I was a kid we owned a dog...cocker spaniel. It's been cats all the way as an adult. No expert here. Are any dog breeds QUIET?

Or are they all bouncy jouncy animated energetic needy for attention 24/7? Any dogs you don't have to walk? Any that poop inside in a certain place like cats? If you have big yard they just "go" outside. If you don't? If you coop them up in an apartment or home with no yard, ya gotta walk 'em twice a day right? Rain or shine? Feeling peppy or not? They are high maintenance compared to cats aren't they?

    I prefer dogs, always have. Yes they're needy - but far more affectionate than cats are. Cats are only affectionate when it suits them, they're selfish. And evil bastards. If they had opposable thumbs, they'd wipe us out.
    Dogs love you unconditionally. And you can train them to poop where they're supposed to, anything else is plain laziness on the owner's part.

    The name seems vaguely familiar R. It is a very exotic-sounding name. Do they originate in far-off lands like say Bali Hai or Fantasy Island? Your list of what cats are/aren't isn't fair and balanced. It seems that they have offended you in some way because they don't fal all over you all the time. Cats are independent, self-contained and remarkably self-sufficient. Of course they NEED you to provide water and food and a place to poop which you keep clean and a roof over their heads. In return when they are in the mood and often when you most need it they climb up on your lap and snuggle against your chest and purr. They can stay that way for a very long time in cat time. A soothing machine to warm your heart feed your soul and they let you know you know that you are not alone. At night when they are in the mood they will crawl up on the bed and get very comfy as they fall asleep. They can be on you or by you or away from you. Their choice. I'm an independent loner and not needy. As a result am I repelled by needy people needy animals. They don't do a thing for me. I appreciate independence and self-sufficience tempered by occasional unpredictable shows of affection. It suits me. I don't dislike dogs at all. I just don't want to live with them. Thank you for your reply. Now I was kinder to dogs than you were to cats. Why is that I wonder? You call cats selfish and evil and bastards. I call dogs needy and noisy and high maintenance.     My wife and daughter are cat people, I'm not. Maureen had a cat that HATED me, used to lie in wait and slash at any exposed skin of mine it could see. I never mistreated it in any way, other than hollering at it as I made yet another trip to the bathroom for antiseptic cream and Q-tips.

    I find the smaller the dog the more yelpy they are. 
    I have never had to "walk" my dogs. They have been trained to let me know they need to go.  Yes it is possible to train a dog to use a box in the house....they even sell dog litter. (I have never tried or used but know it exists) 

    Dogs are more needy but they are more affectionate as well. I have had both cats and dogs most of my adult life. And do currently have both. 
    My dog is a long haired doxie. She only barks at strangers. Most are very loud but I trained her not to be. I am more concerned about my cat with strangers. He does not like them. And will attack. It a new sititation. We have never had a guard cat.

    I had a golden retriever/australian shepherd cross once.  She was a very docile dog (quiet, good tempered).
    The dog I have now isn't too noisy unless you play with him or take him outside to run.  He's half chihuahua and half australian shepard (24 lbs.).  He'll poop wherever you tell him to... and on command.  Unfortunately, he can get quite hyper at times.  That's when he run quickly back and forth across the living room with a large stuffed dog in his mouth (the stuffed dog is nearly as big as he is).  If I take him outside during one of these hyper moments he'll run laps around my upper yard, defecate, then go back inside and continue racing around the house (with a stuffed dog or mooses in his mouth) until he tires himself out or he hears a "bite" fall in the kitchen (anyones kitchen, not just mine).  he hates to get wet.  When He has to go out in the rain, he'll lay his large ears to the side (like an umbrella) and quickly dodge the raindrops to do his "thing", then zip unde cover.
