Do you have a favorite terribly depressing Christmas song?

I surely do - - Dwight Yoakam's "Come On Christmas"

this song, immediately in my first hearing, became one of my top Christmas songs to go to --

it's such a downer but Dwight makes me feel great about it all

(if you don't listen [shame on you], at least check out the lyrics.

:)

EDIT: GREAT trumpet parts in here, too

Come on Christmas
Please take me away
Keep me hidden safe
'Til January's second day
Come on Christmas
Come on Noel

I'll wrap myself up in the cheer
That's so abundant
This time of year
Come on Christmas
Come on Noel

Instrumental

Even though it's just September
I can forget to remember
All the empty nights
Still in my way

Come on Christmas
Embrace me with some joy
'Til the last few lonely moments
Of this year have been destroyed
Come on Christmas
Come on Noel

I'll just let visions of the season
Blind these worn-out sights
Still in my mind
Come on Christmas
Come on Noel

Come on Christmas...

    I've never heard this before.
    I like it!
And it certainly fits my question for sure! Thanks, Jane S.
    :)

That's a handsome picture of Haggard.

Well, I finally listened -- and that is flawless.

Never heard the song until a couple of days ago on the radio, by chance --  and, then, only a bit part of it and it was sung by someone other than Mitchell. I recognized parts of the lyrics as I listened to Joni's version. I looked it up just now and saw that she wrote the song and is the original artist. I much prefer her version over whomever I heard the other day.

Yup, this song qualifies as depressing.

I can't listen to anything by Dwight Yokel.  Sorry.

  • I’m not usually fond of country but I love him.

I'm the EXACT same way about the country music genre and Dwight Yoakam!
    :)
    :)

I saw him in concert. Loved it! A very understated and unassuming yet very personable stage presence which I found very appealing -- his talent just shone everywhere.
    :)

About country music --  I need to admit that I adore Bobbie Gentry, too. And Patsy Cline just completely and utterly blows me away!

    I finally listened.
    Thanks for posting it!
    :)

I've never heard this song nor Schultz. Bear with me on my thoughts, yikes :)
I have to admit I don't like his voice and I don't know why, either because it's a fine voice.
The song reminded me too much of another song I don't like - - something about a child buying Christmas shoes or something.Like that one, this song seemed, to me, to be too much InYourFace and maudlin. And the background musical accompaniment is over the top for me. I like best the opening and closing parts of the song, when it's simple and quiet.

My, we're not doing so well in agreeing on some of our music likes -- we both know i do't like Lauren Daigle, either .
    :)

But I'm glad you answered -- these type of songs are exactly what I am interested in hearing. I like the idea of music and songs that aren't happy, when everyone is 'expected' to be happy.

OMG -- no fair, my2cents, ha!
    :)

I got only through West's opening monologue, to the 0:27 seconds mark - -  I simply cannot watch or listen at the moment. That's too emotional for me right now. My best to everyone involved in that situation.

I'll let you know when I listen.

    Just watched and listened.
Sad to watch and listen. Nice, though, too, somehow.
Didn't know about this specific story.
I looked up some more details about it all.
    Thanks for answering.
