I think it relate to the feeling of wellbeing that you feel in side your chest when you are emotionally happy ,it's like the most addictive drug and a very very euphoric feeling of your emotions....They just waft over you in an instance and bathe in something that is almost impossible to discribe adequately...

Sometimes there are things that no words can discribe Rosie...we most all know they exist ,yet the correct words needed to discribe them ,has of yet not been established yet in English...
Maybe there are words of phrases in other languages that have written words  to express such feeling....:)

For thousands of years the muscular organ in our chest has been thought of as the most vital organ.  Let's face it, if it stops working we die.  Sure, these days our medical advances can bypass the heart using machines, but that wasn't always the case.  It wasn't that long ago that if one didn't feel a heartbeat in a person, that person was considered dead.  Since this organ was vital to existence, it was considered to be the 'center' of  the body (not geographical center).
A person's thoughts, feelings, and emotions are central to their being.  It's what "runs" them, so to speak; their essence, their core - their "soul".  Therefore, that part of a person was also referred to as the 'heart'.
