It means EQUAL. Not tilting the ball in favor of either side. Let people/business stand on their own. I do not believe in affirmative action it is not equal.
Yes. To me, it means that personal attributes such as gender, sexual orientation, age, skin colour, ethnic or religious background, disabilities are not permitted to affect access to education, medicine, justice, travel, social services, wage parity, job conditions and job opportunities.
If a person can do something, then personal qualities that have no effect on that something should be no bar to their right to access.
When something is radically new, I think there's a place for positive discrimination in favour of a person from a group that typically experiences negative discrimination. This enables role models to rise to the top. It shows everybody just what people are capable of. After breaking the initial barrier, it becomes much easier for others to follow in their footsteps. Slowly the differences between privileged and non-privileged groups get ironed out. It seems, if one looks at the relative social equality between men and women, that it takes many generations to achieve. We started feminism with the suffragettes more than a hundred years ago, and we still haven't achieved equal wages or freedom from sexual molestation and violence. There are still many professions where women are not welcome, and where those who try to enter are given a very hard time.

Slowly the differences between privileged and non-privileged groups get ironed out. It seems, if one looks at the statistical gaps between men and women, that full equality takes many generations to achieve. We started with demanding the right to vote more than a hundred years ago, and then the right to inherit and not to lose our property to our husbands. We've fought every step of the way and we still haven't achieved equal wages or freedom from sexual molestation and violence. There are still many professions where women are not welcome, and where those who try to enter are given a very hard time.
