Greed is not a new thing, nor is selfishness. People have always been stupid and corrupt. However, today -
* there are more people than ever before (10% of 100 is 10, but 10% of 5000 is 500) * Media makes it easier to know about things one wouldn't normally know. When the first newspapers were printed, more people were made aware of things that only a few were aware of before (instead of 10 people knowing that Mr. Jones cow had triplets, the entire area knew). * The internet makes it easier to see everything that happens worldwide all the time (as opposed to the old "film at 11").
Even so, the answer is yes - people arebecoming more corrupt. The reason being is that we allow/tolerate it. We even glamorize corruption. People we look up to flaunt their corruption (eg. government officials, media and sports stars). Things which were once called evil are now considered acceptable, even necessary (eg. lying, cheating, theft). The More people who do these things, the more others will join in (mob mentality). When it comes to punishing these kind of behaviors, we become very lax. We make up excuses to help justify these actions (if the punishment for robbing a bank were a mere slap on the wrist, what's to deter everyone from robbing a bank?)
