    Last time we were in Lebanon, Beirut specifically was '82.  We do have and Embassy there I believe.

      Neither president Bush was the beginning nor end of that situation. Dwight D. Eisenhower was the US president when America first sent combat troops into the Middle East after World War II with the July 1958 US Marine landing in Beirut, Lebanon. The US military presence in that region has been continuous ever since, in at least a half a dozen countries for various amounts of time.
