    Having developed languages so we can use words to think and reason more efficiently and express ideas instead of just relying on instincts like animals do.

    Don't animals have their own language though Kg? Perhaps they have wisdom among them and sages and scholars. I can't believe that homo saps are the only species that developed language. Now writing is something else again. Maybe they do have certain scratch marks in certain configurations that can be understood among them. Wouldn't it fascinating to dive in the find out?     Yes I think animals and other species have ways of communication with each other, just not in words but like body language, audible  tones of expression sort of thing..
